Biggest ever anti-war demo in Poland!
Marcin Weber 15-02-2003 21:36
Three thousand demonstration in Warsaw and local protests in Gdansk, Olsztyn, Poznan, Rzeszow and Wroclaw made the biggest ever anti-war protest in Poland. On February 15, Polish civil society joined world wide protests against war with Iraq.

Poland says NO to war with Iraq Poland says NO to war with Iraq

Approximately three thousand people gathered in the capital of Poland to say no to war with Iraq. Demonstrators in Warsaw cheered and shouted: "Miller, Kwasniewski - dogs of Bush? (prime minister and president of Poland), "World is for people not for Bush ?, "Stop war', "Bush is terrorist".

Numerous organisations supported February 15th protest, including Pracownicza Demokracja, Association of Muslim Students in Poland, Association of Polish-Iraqi Friendship, Amnesty International, Christian organisations and many more.

Local demonstrations took place also in other cities across the country: in Gdansk, Olsztyn, Poznan, Rzeszow and in Wroclaw.

In Poznan, around two hundred protesters went on streets to say: "Stop war", "War not in our name". The demonstration was organised by Poznan Anti-war Coalition.

Protesters across Poland said in February 15th: "Do find solution to problems, don't bomb them", "This war is for profit of multinational corporations, not ordinary citizens", "We don't have to participate in referendum on EU accession, we are in Europe already, as we've joined Europe in the common protest today".

In Gdansk, the demonstration of one hundred young people was organised by the Movement of Alternative Society. They had signs with slogans: " Fifth - Don't kill, at least civilians?, "Bush wants oil, and what does Poland want??.

500 demonstrators in Wroclaw gathered in the main square. They stated clearly that they do not support Saddam Hussain but the civilian population of Iraq. All military interventions of USA were named and the US foreign policy was condemned. People in Wroclaw shouted "War is not the solution" and the poem of Julian Tuwim (famous Polish poet) was read.

For the first time since the beginning of Bush-led "war on terror" the anti-war efforts were noticed reasonably by Polish mainstream media. Previously, corporate media hardly made any attention to world wide protest as well as to strong opposition to war by the Catholic church and the Pope (relatively influential in Poland).

According to recent opinion pools, almost two thirds of Poles say the country should not support war on Iraq. 75% believes Polish army should not participate in the military action.

Many people claim that F15 protest was the biggest anti-war demonstration in Poland ever. Without any doubt, it was the biggest Polish demonstration against war with Iraq till now. It gives a very positive perspectives for future civil society protests in Poland.
